ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

The driver involved in a hit-and-run crash in Astoria has turned himself into police.

Police spokesman Brad Johnston said the crash happened just after midnight Saturday morning near the intersection of Hume and West Marine Drive.

On Saturday afternoon, police said the driver of the car, David Shane Gutman, 31, turned himself into police.

Officers said Gutman was driving the SUV that hit a telephone pole and crashed.

Investigators said that before the crash happened the passenger's door was swinging open.

James Carpenter, 29, of Hammond was killed in the crash. Investigators believe he was not wearing a seat belt.

A nurse who witnessed the collision administered first aid to Carpenter, but once responders arrived he was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the crash scene was being reconstructed, police found the SUV believed to be involved about a block away in a parking lot. A second passenger who was in the car was found at a nearby tavern suffering from minor injuries.

Police said the passenger wasn't charged with any crimes.

Investigators are still interested in any witnesses who may have seen Gutman or Carpenter on Friday night before the accident.

Anyone with information is asked to call Astoria police at 503-325-4411.
