Two years ago today, Kyron Horman vanished from his school in northwest Portland, sparking a massive search and investigation that turned up no sign of the boy and no suspects or persons of interest being named in the case.
Now, with years passing, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children shared an age progression artist's image that shows what authorities suspect Kyron looks like today.
Kaine Horman, Kyron's father, said that while he has looked forward to the release of the photo, the process of creating it has been tough.
"I've had the conversation with many people, about just that feeling of how unfair it is to ask a parent ... to take a guess," Kaine Horman said. "So that part, I think that part is difficult, but as far as it getting out there, it's a good thing."
The two-year anniversary of Kyron's disappearance comes on the heels of a $10 million lawsuit being filed by Desiree Young, Kyron's biological mother, against Terri Horman, Kyron's stepmother.
The lawsuit accuses Terri Horman of kidnapping her stepson.
"I believe that Terri Horman is responsible for where my son is. The time has come for Terri Horman to take responsibility for what she has done and to tell me, and my family, where my son is and how he got there," Young said during a news conference last week.
Kyron was last seen at Skyline School, where he was a second-grader, on the morning of June 4, 2010. Terri Horman told deputies she saw him walking down a hall, but he never made it to class that morning.
The investigation intensified in the weeks that followed, and cracks in the marriage of Kaine and Terri Horman began to show. By the end of June, Kaine Horman had filed for divorce and asked for a restraining order from Terri Horman after learning of an allegation that she had tried to hire someone to kill him.
By July, as Kyron's mother, Desiree Young, her husband Tony Young and Kaine Horman formed a united front, Terri Horman retreated and hired prominent Defense Attorney Stephen Houze.
Since then, there have been several searches for evidence across northwest Portland, and Kyron's parents continue to maintain that Terri Horman is to blame for the disappearance of Kyron.
Sheriff's Capt. Jason Gates and his team plan to keep pushing forward in the investigation until they reach a conclusion.
"As time pieces together, it's getting that critical piece. It's one piece of information that will break a case, and that's what we're looking for," Gates said.
Family, community hold out hope
The Wall of Hope, a memorial in Beaverton, still stands and is full of notes, cards and memories for Kyron.
Community members left more notes and balloons there throughout Monday.
"He needs to come home and be with his mom and dad in whatever capacity," said Jan Hollis-White, who visited the Wall of Hope on Monday.
Kaine Horman also continues to attend events to raise awareness for the disappearance of his son.
Hundreds gathered over the weekend for the second Run For Kyron at Cook Park in Tigard.
At Skyline School, the principal said no special events were planned at the school Monday. It was scheduled to be a normal day for students.
