Beaverton schools approve budget, major cuts

BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

Serious cuts are in store for the Beaverton School District.

The school board voted Monday night to adopt its budget. Administrators had to find a way to make up for a $37 million shortfall.

The new budget calls for 344 jobs to be eliminated, effective July 1.

It also means a lot of big changes are likely going to come down for Beaverton schools next fall, including larger class sizes.

"We're not going to let it die and we're not going to let our teachers hang out there on the edge," said Barb Schulz, a parent in the district. "The board may think that we'll be done with them if they pass it as is, but it's not going to happen."

Some other cuts include middle school assistant principals at four schools and a reduction of high school counselors and safety workers.
