The Longview police lobby was closed for about an hour Wednesday morning after a man brought in a substance he thought might be an explosive.
He said he found the material by a garbage dumpster in the 1000 block of 11th Avenue.
Concerned the material was some type of explosive, he brought it to the police station to turn in.
As a safety precaution, the police station lobby was closed while the substance was identified.
Longview police contacted the Portland Police Bomb Squad and provided photographs of the suspicious item.
The Bomb Squad said they had recently collected some of the same material from a location in their area and that the substance was not explosive.
The police lobby was re-opened around 9:30 a.m.
Police warn people to leave anything believed to be an explosive device where it's found, get a safe distance away, and call police.
