LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

Now every student who walks on the Mark Morris High School campus in Longview, WA, will remember what Mikayla Bragg did for her country.

A statue in her honor was unveiled in the school's history wing courtyard Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old army specialist was shot and killed in Afghanistan last December. She was the first Cowlitz County soldier to be killed in wartime since Vietnam.

Robert Blackman, Mark Morris' assistant principal said, "The people of this community made a positive thing out of a very hard thing.  That this was a great life lesson for these young people about sacrifice and being committed to your country."

She graduated from Mark Morris High School in 2008.

The honorary statue was paid for with private donations as a tribute to the local hero who gave her life in service to her country.
