PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The Interstate Bridge is getting some repairs this coming week. That means some lifts and night closures will take a toll on traffic.
The southbound span of the bridge will see some lifts Monday and Tuesday nights. Then on Wednesday and Thursday, there will be full closures overnight.
Crews are working on repairing the rollers guiding the counterweight on the 54-year-old southbound span. The rollers failed this spring.
Until repairs are completed, the lift can be moved at only very slow speeds. The northbound lift is working just fine. That means the southbound traffic will have longer delays during bridge lifts.
Helping out ODOT with the repairs is Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, an engineering and architecture firm based in Northbrook, IL. The company will make sure the counterweight is in the right place.
Another overnight closure may be necessary the week of June 18.
During the closures, southbound traffic should detour to Interstate 205 and cross into Oregon over the Glenn Jackson Bridge. The path for bicyclists and pedestrians will remain open on the northbound span.
Here is the closure schedule:
- 11 p.m. Monday, June 11, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, bridge lifts of up to 20 minutes each. During lifts, the southbound span will be closed to all traffic, including bicycles and pedestrians.
- 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, bridge lifts of up to 20 minutes each. During lifts, the southbound span will be closed to all traffic, including bicycles and pedestrians.
- 11 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, to 5 a.m. Thursday, June 14, closed to all southbound traffic for the entire six hours, including bicycles and pedestrians.
- 11 p.m. Thursday June 14, to 5 a.m. Friday, June 15, closed to all southbound traffic for the entire six hours, including bicycles and pedestrians.
