Campers snatch up prime spots to watch Grand Floral Parade

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Dozens of people pitched a tent and set up camp on the sidewalk along The Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade route Friday night.

Angela Biggs and her family pitched a tent early Friday morning along MLK Boulevard, securing a prime viewing spot to watch the flower-filled floats pass by.

"It is amazing to watch the floats go by," she said. "Some of them are half a block long. And all the flowers and the natural beauty that goes into them is amazing!"

Every year on the day before the parade, hundreds of people just like Biggs and her family set up camp along the parade route.

The floats will travel down MLK Boulevard, across the Burnside Bridge and into Downtown Portland.

For Joyce Brown, it's been a family tradition for decades.

For the past 34 years, she's been coming to the same corner along MLK Boulevard and setting up camp the day before the parade. She even marked her territory with some sidewalk chalk.

"We're going to be playing some games and reading some books and looking at all the other people and see who's here and make new friends," said Brown. To secure a spot along the parade route, the city says you have to physically be there and stay there. Taping off a section of the sidewalk and leaving isn't allowed.

FOX 12 will have live parade coverage beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
