BEND, OR (KPTV) -
A 40-year-old man running a half-marathon in central Oregon collapsed while running and died Sunday, deputies said.
William Tufts Jr., of Bend, was competing in the Dirty Half race.
He collapsed on the Expressway Trail about two miles up from the main parking lot, Deschutes County deputies said. A 911 caller alerted police, but was not able to pinpoint the exact location of Tufts on the trail.
Two deputies entered the trail at 4610 Road and started running about 4 miles in with an automated external defibrillator (AED).
A short time later, an off-duty emergency room doctor and nurse arrived at Tufts' location and began CPR. Paramedics then arrived and attempted advanced life support, but they were unable to revive him.
Eventually, they took Tufts two miles down the trail to a waiting ambulance, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
