PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police searched a parking garage in downtown, but were unable to find a man who they said drew and pointed a gun at a Portland State University public safety officer Monday morning.

The man was thought to be armed and inside the Southwest 12th Avenue and Market Street parking structure, which is located near the campus of Portland State University.

Officers first responded to the location at 10:21 a.m. and they quickly worked to contain the man inside the parking structure.

But once police searched the garage, they didn't find the suspect.

A public safety alert on the Portland State website lists the wanted man as David Chilton, who is in his 50s and has a gray beard, blue eyes and brown hair.

He was last seen wearing a dark jacket, a rust-colored plaid shirt over a green T-shirt, black shoes and a gray baseball cap. He was seen carrying a North Face backpack and a gym bag. Students should call 911 if they see him, the public safety statement said.

Lincoln High School, St. Mary's High School and Portland State University entered lockdown mode as a precaution while officers surrounded the parking garage, police said. Meanwhile, police told parents who have children at the Helen Gordon Child Development Center on Southwest 12th Avenue that they shouldn't be concerned. All children are safe, police said, and officers planned to stay inside the daycare with staff and children until the incident was resolved.

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic was diverted around the police activity, but at about 2 p.m., officers reopened streets in the area.

The police activity happened as finals week began for students at Portland State. According to a university statement, finals will continue as scheduled.

Police are continuing to search the area for Chilton. He may still be armed, police said. If you see him, call 911 immediately.

Court records in Washington County show Chilton was convicted of theft and burglary in 1982 and ID theft in 2007.
