PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A member of the Oregon Beekeepers Association helped grocery store staff remove a honeybee hive from the roof of the New Seasons Market on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway in Raleigh Hills.

Store manager Bill McGee said workers started noticing swarming bees more than a week ago. An expert confirmed that a honeybee hive had been established on the building's roof, directly above one of its signs.

The hive was relocated Tuesday with the help of beekeeper Howard Charleboix. Maintenance workers first had to dismantle part of the roof to allow access to the hive. Charleboix removed the queen and scooped the rest of the bees into a portable hive to be transported to a bee yard in Oregon City.

McGee said several New Seasons customers were worried that the hive would be destroyed. He said the decision to relocate the hive without harming the bees was made to preserve an important part of the local food economy.
