PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man accused of a crime spree across the city in which police allege he pulled a gun on a Portland State University security officer, robbed a Key Bank branch and carjacked a woman's SUV is expected to appear in federal court Wednesday.

Portland police took David Chilton into custody at the Fred Meyer store on Interstate Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, hours after they announced a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Officers were first called to the store just before 9 p.m. when they received a report of an armed man on the second floor of the grocery store.

Police evacuated the store and the surrounding businesses while officers contained the suspect inside. Meanwhile, the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), the police bureau's version of SWAT, was called in to help officers arrest Chilton.

An employee inside the store told FOX 12 that she saw a co-worker ushering customers out of the store just before she was getting ready to close up her department. When she asked what was going on, she was told there was an armed man on the second floor.

She immediately locked up her department and hid in a back room with a fellow employee. They watched as police took Chilton into custody more than an hour later. Witnesses said K-9 officers were used in the arrest.

Chilton's arrest took place a day after he allegedly drew his gun at a uniformed PSU public safety officer in downtown Portland. Police said he fled into a downtown parking garage, leading officers to surround the building and close off streets for hours until they learned Chilton had slipped away.

Chilton also stands accused of robbing the Key Bank at Northeast 102nd Avenue and Halsey Street, where police said a gun and a fake bomb was used during the robbery. Chilton made his getaway from the bank after approaching a woman and demanding her 1997 Toyota 4Runner, according to officers.

Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said Chilton was scheduled to meet with detectives to discuss Monday's bank robbery before being taken to jail. Chilton was convicted of robbing another bank in 2007 and was recently released from custody.
