Portland man convicted in suspicious death of cat

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland man convicted of animal abuse can't own any pets for another five years, thanks in part to an alert veterinarian.

That veterinarian contacted Oregon Humane Society officers, concerned about a cat named Tubby, shortly after the boyfriend of Tubby's owner moved in with the family.

Nicholas Martinez, 25, repeatedly abused Tubby.

The cat had a number of cuts and burns, as well as head and rib fractures, and eventually died.  An Oregon State University veterinarian examined Tubby's remains and determined the cat was swung by the hind legs and slammed into a stationary object.

In addition to a ban on owning cats, Martinez must now pay several fines and do community service.
