Dad, son to climb Mt. St. Helens for epilepsy awareness

Posted: Updated:

A Colorado man and his father plan to climb Mt. St. Helens to bring awareness to epilepsy.

It's a disease 24-year-old John Olson has lived with since he was four years old.

John Olson and his father, Tom Olson, love the outdoors, but for years they've only been able to gaze up at mountains. That's because the threat of John Olson suffering a seizure on a mountain was too great.

Now, however, a therapy device is controlling John Olson's condition, and he and his father will head up Mt. St. Helens this week.

The two have already climbed several 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado.

John Olson said he wants to inspire kids with epilepsy to go after their own challenges,

"You can do it and it will be great and they can succeed, no one has to be afraid at all, epilepsy is no big deal really," he said.

The Olsons planned to make the climb Thursday.
