Faculty, staff and students of Portland State University will be able to use the Portland Streetcar for free, thanks to a program negotiated by PSU and Oregon Health and Sciences University.
Those who worked on the program said nearly two-thirds of PSU students and workers commute by ways other than car. They said the free service will be key for those affiliated with PSU, now that the streetcar is being expanded to Portland's eastside and the free-rail zone is being eliminated.
While the three-year program comes at a cost of $195,000, organizers said the university will foot the bill.
