A 29-year old Gervais man died Sunday afternoon when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and crashed into an oncoming van on Highway 224 east of Estacada.
Police said Roman Chernishov, of Gervais, was riding eastbound on Highway 224 with another motorcycle operated by 22-year-old Pabil Cam, of Aurora, when the crash occurred.
Investigators said as Chernishov attempted a right turn, he lost control of his motorcycle and traveled across the center line. His motorcycle crashed into the left front corner of a westbound van driven by Tudor Ursu, 51, from southeast Portland.
The second motorcycle, operated by Cam, braked hard and slowed enough that as it collided with the downed motorcycle he was able to get off safely. Cam was not injured. Cherishnov, who was wearing a helmet at the time, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Ursu and his three passengers were not injured.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Portland and Government Camp offices are continuing the investigation. Speed in the curve may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
