LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -
A mom and her three teenage children escaped their burning Lake Oswego house just in time Monday morning as flames ripped through the second floor and attic of their 5,000-square-foot home.
The flames trapped one teen on the second floor of the home, but her mother and siblings set up a ladder to help her get to safety.
"By the time firefighters showed up, we were able to actually use the ladder they had in place and go up and finish coaxing her down," said David Morris, a Lake Oswego Fire Department battalion chief. "She had already exited the (home) and was just on the roof. The family did a good job and was very instrumental in saving her."
The fire broke out at about 8:30 a.m. at the home on Woodland Terrace in the affluent Portland suburb.
Arriving fire crews found heavy fire in the back side of the second floor and smoke coming from all parts of the second story.
Lake Oswego firefighters said all the mother and three children were taken to a hospital as a precaution to be treated for smoke inhalation.
There's no word on what caused the fire and investigators also haven't estimated how much damage was done to the home.
It's not clear what happened to the family's cats that were inside the home when the fire broke out, but a dog was found uninjured.
