ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

A St. Helens man, who fire officials said heated up urine in a rice cooker and then pumped the fumes into a neighboring apartment, has pleaded guilty to assault charges.

Patrick Stangis received a 30-day jail sentence, which he has already served, plus two years of probation and 10 hours of community service. He's also not allowed to have contact with the victims, with whom Stangis had a long-standing feud, according to police.

St. Helen's police said Stangis hoped to force his neighbors to move out when he mixed the urine with common household chemicals back in May 2. Early that morning, five people reported a strange smell and then became sick, officers said. Four of the five were taken to a hospital to be treated.

Officers said there were several complaints about the home in the weeks leading up to the incident. Chief Steve Salle told FOX 12 that Stangis had admitted in the past to burning hair and causing fumes to go up through the heating ducts to the upstairs apartment.

As part of Stangis' deal with prosecutors last week, he had reckless endangerment and menacing charges dropped.
