A local man who stabbed his mother's boyfriend to death is going to prison for 20 years.
Samuel Leisure pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter instead of murder earlier this month and appeared before a Multnomah County judge to learn his fate Tuesday.
Police say Leisure stabbed Dennis Weinberger in Weinberger's southeast Portland home in October 2010. Leisure was the son of Weinberger's girlfriend and a longtime fixture in Weinberger's family. Because of that closeness, family and friends displayed a mix of emotions during statements they read in court.
"You made the choice to brutally murder my grandfather," said Tyson Riegel. "He trusted you. He let you into his home any time you needed. He tried to help you when you had no one else. You took advantage of his kindness and he had to pay the ultimate price."
"My father loved you as his own son," said Richard Weinberger, the victim's stepson. "He did for you what he didn't do for his other kids. I don't understand it. I wasn't there. I forgive you, but I'll never forget."
Leisure also addressed the court, apologizing and saying he still doesn't really know what happened the night he killed Weinberger. He said medication he had taken may have affected his actions.
He will eligible for parole after 18 years.
