A golfer expecting a peaceful evening on the links at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland had to use his golf cart to ram four teenagers who confronted him while they were armed with weapons Monday.
Charles James, who suffers from a neuro-muscular disease and had his service dog, Bishop, with him on the course, said he first spotted the group of four young men standing on the green, playing with the flag stick on the 15th hole.
"I waited, and they weren't moving, so I yelled, 'Hey, I'm trying to hit,'" James said.
The group left and took the flag with them, James said. When he yelled at them to bring it back, things took a violent turn.
"The one guy raised the rifle at my dog, and when he did, I floored this (cart) and ran right into him," James said.
James jumped out to grab what turned out to be a BB gun, but another teen was armed with a knife.
"When he started at me, Bishop grabbed his leg, and when he did, I back knuckled him in the face," James said.
The four teens then took off.
Though James' dog is trained to help during a medical episode, James said he was surprised his dog reacted that way.
"In fact, I never thought he'd be aggressive," James said. "I mean, he runs from cats."
And like Bishop acted to protect James, the golfer said his first thought was to protect his companion.
"Today, when I think about it, I get kind of scared. But now when that was happening. I was just thinking about him not shooting my dog," James said. "If he had shot my dog, they (the police) wouldn't have to hunt for them."
Portland police are looking for four male suspects last seen running from the north Portland golf course. They are described as Hispanic teens, one of whom was possibly in his 20s and was 5 feet 8 inches tall and 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and black pants. Another suspect wore a brown and white shirt.
They fled on foot westbound on the slough bike path at around 7:45 p.m.
