PORTLAND, OR (KPTV/AP) -

A rare mountain fox thought to be gone from Oregon's Cascade Range may have been spotted in the Mount Hood Wilderness earlier this spring.

New photos from Cascadia Wild, a nonprofit group tracking the wolverine and the Sierra Nevada red fox in Oregon, show the fox on a snow-covered Mount Hood. The photos are timestamped March 10 and March 17.

Teri Lysak, of Cascadia Wild, said they have been seen fox tracks for years, but now have verifiable proof of the red fox's existence in the area.

Taylor McKinnon of the Center for Biological Diversity told The Associated Press that if DNA tests prove they are Sierra Nevada red foxes, it would be an important development in efforts to restore healthy populations of one of the rarest mammals in North America.
