VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -
A six-hour standoff with police ended when officers used a Taser on a man and took him into custody.
Vancouver police said the hours-long standoff started at about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday after they received a call from a woman who lives near the intersection of 32nd and Harney streets.
She told dispatchers she had gotten into a fight with a man and needed help.
Rhonda Lokey lives next door to the woman. She said the man, identified as Arvell Kindell, is the woman's boyfriend and describes him as quiet and mellow and never expected the situation to escalate to a SWAT standoff.
"They fight a little bit, but everyone fights a little bit and this is out of control," Lokey said.
When officers arrived, only Kindell was at the home.
They said he took off running to a neighboring home and knocked on the door. When the homeowners opened the door, Kindell forced his way in and barricaded himself inside, authorities said.
"I heard they were fighting and he ran up to the house where he does yard work for them and says he's not going to be taken alive. I don't know, that's not like him," Lokey said.
The homeowners managed to escape safely through a back door.
Meanwhile, SWAT team members and hostage negotiators arrived to try to get Kindell out peacefully.
Throughout the night, FOX 12 cameras captured Kindell opening a door and yelling something out at officers.
Police said Kindell was wanted for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and had previously been given a "no-contact order" with the woman.
Officers finally took Kindell into custody after using a Taser on him at about 11 p.m. He is expected to face several charges, including violating a no-contact order and burglary.
