HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -
Washington County's Department of Land Use and Transportation will temporarily close Cornelius Pass Road between Quatama Road and Cherry Drive in Hillsboro for six months, beginning Monday.
The closure is necessary in order to replace the bridge over Rock Creek. The road is scheduled to reopen Jan. 1, 2013.
During the closure, all through traffic, including pedestrians and bicyclists, will be detoured to Cornell Road, 206th Avenue and Quatama Road. Detour signs will be provided along the designated detour route.
Trucks are encouraged to use 185th Avenue or Brookwood Parkway as their designated north-south route. Commuters should expect delays on detour routes during the closure period. Access to local businesses will be available at all times.
The bridge replacement is one element of a larger project to improve Cornelius Pass Road from Aloclek Drive to just south of Wilkins Street. In addition to replacing the bridge over Rock Creek, the project will widen Cornelius Pass Road to two travel lanes in each direction with a center turn lane.
Additional improvements include the installation of a traffic signal at Cherry Drive, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, street lighting, landscaping, and upgrades to storm drainage and water quality treatment facilities.
The entire improvement project is anticipated to be complete by the summer of 2013. Upon completion of this project, the entirety of Cornelius Pass Road between TV Highway and West Union Road will have been improved to urban standards.
