HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -
All lanes of Highway 26 were shut down in both directions Thursday morning to safely allow for two elk to cross the road.
The elk were spotted along the highway by several FOX 12 viewers throughout the morning. Two sightings were reported near the Shute Road exit and Hillsboro Stadium.
The closure of the highway at Cornelius Pass Road didn't last long, but ODOT video showed some drivers briefly drive the opposite way on an on-ramp and across a field in order to avoid the wait.
Highway closures due to animals are a rare occurrence in the Portland metro area.
