Oregon State police are investigating a deadly crash involving a school bus and car on Highway 18 near Sheridan, OR.

OSP reports the crash happened around 3:15 p.m. on Highway 18 just north of Sheridan and resulted in the death of 73-year-old Lester J. Lindberg of Grande Ronde.

According to OSP Sergeant Brad Hessel, the bus owned by Newberg Christian Church was traveling westbound on Highway 18 near milepost 34.

That's when a 2005 Ford Ranger pickup drifted onto the shoulder. Investigators said Lindberg tried to drive back into the eastbound lane but lost control and collided with the bus.

Lindberg died at the scene. None of the nine children or adult chaperone was hurt in the crash.

The school bus was traveling to a church camp on the coast when the crash happened. Parents and church members responded and took the children to the camp.

The highway was shut down for more than three hours as crews investigated the crash. The highway reopened around 8:15 p.m.
