A man who accidentally fired a shotgun round into his upstairs neighbor's apartment hopes other gun owners won't repeat his mistake.
"I feel horrible," said Kevin Sanfeliz, 22.
After he was released from jail, Sanfeliz called FOX 12 and said he wanted to publicly apologize for the incident that took place early Sunday morning at the Timber Ridge Apartments.
Sanfeliz said he was cleaning his shotgun when it accidentally went off. The round from the gun went through his ceiling and into his neighbor's apartment upstairs.
"I took the safety off and clicked the trigger like I always do to make sure it's all clear and everything. And there was another shell in it. It was like that far away from my face and it shot off. It knocked me to the ground. I couldn't hear," he said.
Luckily, the round missed his face and two people who were sleeping in the upstairs apartment. The neighbors called police when they woke up and saw the hole in their floor from the shotgun.
Police arrested Sanfeliz on charges of reckless endangerment, discharging a weapon in city limits and criminal mischief.
"I want to apologize to everyone in the apartment complex and the community for this," Sanfeliz said.
Sanfeliz admitted he didn't know what he was doing. He bought the shotgun for personal defense a couple of months ago. He said he was teaching himself how to clean the gun by watching YouTube videos on his phone.
Sanfeliz said he should have taken a gun safety course before buying the firearm. He now hopes other gun owners learn from his potentially deadly mistake.
"Be very, very careful. Be very safe with them because they are very dangerous."
Police confiscated the shotgun as evidence. If he does get it back, Sanfeliz said he plans to sell it.
