SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
Oregon is taking its first formal step in dealing with the debris from the Japanese Tsunami.
Gov. John Kitzhaber has established the Tsunami Debris Task Force to handle what's sure to be a continuing problem along the coast.
The group will have its first official meeting Thursday afternoon.
A major issue on the agenda is the question of cleanup costs.
Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire said west coast state should not have to foot the bill.
"The cost of the debris cleanup is going to be unknown at this point. The primary financial responsibility for cleanup lies with the federal government," Gregoire said.
Oregon has not yet asked for federal help.
A spokesperson for Kitzhaber's office said several west coast states may join forces to ask for federal funding.
