Body found in SW Portland’s Washington Park

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police are investigating the discovery of a woman's body found in a secluded, wooded area within Washington Park.

A ranger at the southwest Portland park made the discovery at 2 p.m.

A spokesman with Portland Parks told Fox 12 rangers found a vacant campsite in the same area about ten days ago, returned today to check on it and discovered the body.

"It's an area that transients frequent," said Sgt. Pete Simpson of Portland Police.

Police aren't revealing much about the woman's age, or the nature of her injuries.  Homicide and forensics detectives collected evidence from the scene, and the Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy tomorrow.

"At this point, we don't know whether it was a homicide, a natural death, or a drug overdose, so we want to preserve everything as if it's a crime," said Sgt. Simpson.

The investigation interrupted the evening calm of Washington Park.  Hiker Kerry Martin heard the commotion of helicopters above the scene and followed news updates from his phone.

"It makes you wonder what you might run into in the trails up here at times," said Martin.
