Alternative jewelry store thief caught on camera

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An alternative jewelry shop in Portland's Pearl District is hoping you can help find a man, they say, stole hundreds of dollars in jewelry from them.

Rebel Jeweler isn't your typical jewelry shop. There are tattooed manikins, complimentary beer and more skulls than diamonds.

Last Thursday, security footage showed a man stealing from right under their noses.

"Some of our most expensive and best selling rings," Owner Tim Greve said. "It was about $1600 worth of jewelry that he took."

On surveillance video, you can see a man in black and wearing sunglasses chatting up the sales clerk.

"He was kind of a smooth talker," employee Karlea Cole said. "He was actually kind of flirtatious and stuff. He would ask me about random things. He would always keep his sunglasses on, which was kind of weird."

Greve said that while the employees were distracted by other customers, the man picked up an expensive ring from the case.

"He had been in before too," Greve said. "So, he had checked us out and knew where he could get us."

The man waited and then put the ring in his back pocket. Then, he grabbed two other high-end silver rings. Two minutes later, he was out the door.

"We were like scrambling looking everywhere, trying to figure out if we set it down somewhere else," Cole said.

"You know, you work so hard to do something and to build something and when people come in and just take it, it hurts. It hurts a lot," Greve said.

The people that work at Rebel Jeweler said the man in the video better not come back.

"This is my store, and I don't like when people come in and take advantage of it," Cole said.
