City council postpones vote on skateboarding ban

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The fate of skateboarders in one southwest Portland neighborhood is still up in the air.

The Portland city council delayed a vote today on whether to ban skateboarding from the steep streets and windy roads around the Washington Park.

Neighbors are concerned that the intersection at southwest Fairview and Kingston is dangerous because they said many skateboarders don't stop at the stop sign. They believe it's just a matter of time before someone gets killed.

The proposed changes to the existing city ordinance would ban skateboards from ten streets:

  • SW Fairview Boulevard between SW Knights Boulevard and SW Kingston Avenue
  • SW Kingston Avenue between SW Tichner Drive and the Washington Park entrance
  • SW Tichner Drive between SW Kingston Avenue and SW Marconi Avenue
  • SW Marconi Avenue
  • SW Park Place between SW Marconi Avenue and SW Wright Avenue
  • SW Lafayette Place
  • SW Hampshire Street between SW Lafayette Place and SW Champlain Drive
  • SW Champlain Drive between SW Hampshire Street and SW Rutland Terrace
  • SW Rutland Terrace
  • West Burnside Street from Skyline Boulevard to SW Vista Avenue

The city council vote has been delayed until Sept. 5.
