RIDGEFIELD, WA (KPTV) -
An Amtrak train hit and killed a young woman in Clark County Wednesday night.
It happened at 8:30 p.m. on a railroad bridge crossing the Lewis River near Lancaster Road in Ridgefield.
Firefighters said a young man and a young woman were walking along the bridge when a train suddenly came toward them.
The engineer blew the train's whistle and hit the emergency brake, but it was already too close.
The young woman was hit by the train and killed, according to Tim Dawdy, battalion chief for Clark County Fire and Rescue.
The young man jumped off the bridge into the river and survived.
Their ages and identities are not yet known.
There is a sign near the bridge that says "Danger: High Speed Trains. No Trespassing."
The bridge serves as a high-speed rail line between Portland and Seattle.
An Amtrak representative said the train was heading to Portland and eventually Eugene.
No one onboard was hurt.
