COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, OR (KPTV) -
A dog that tumbled hundreds of feet off a cliff in the Columbia River Gorge is recovering at a pet hospital this week.
Amanda Reese and her dog, Bodie, were hiking the Eagle Creek trail Monday when the dog stepped too close to the edge and fell.
Fortunately, Reese said, other hikers helped her find Bodie and get him to safety. And that's no small feat - Bodie is a 100-pound Alaskan Malamute.
Reese said one of the Good Samaritans happened to have a hammock, so they made it into a sling and used it to carry the dog out of the woods.
"I couldn't have gone on and enjoyed myself or felt good about my time there if I didn't help," said Josiah Martens, one of the Good Samaritans who helped Reese. "I have a soft spot for dogs."
It took two hours, but the group carried Bodie to a trail where a search-and-rescue team took him the rest of the way.

Bodie must stay in the hospital until he can walk, but doctors are hopeful he will make a full recovery.
"He's been really strong," Reese said. "It's amazing he survived and he weathered his injuries pretty well."
