A predatory sex offender accused of forcing a 10-year-old boy into a bathroom at a Wendy's restaurant and trying to sexually assault him had a warrant out for his arrest as of June 15, according to parole officials.
Parole officers said 49-year-old Adam Brown was wanted because he violated his parole by failing to report to his parole officer and moving out of subsidy housing without notifying anyone.
On Sunday, Brown was standing near the bathroom inside Wendy's at Northeast Sandy Boulevard and 29th Avenue when the 10-year-old boy walked to the restroom.
That's when Brown forced the boy into the bathroom and locked the door, police said.
Brown is accused of attempting to sexually assault the boy, who began to fight back.
"I came in and just heard a little boy screaming, then his dad came in and said call 911, so we got our cell phones and called 911," said witness Sue Roberts.
During the struggle, police said, Brown stabbed the boy multiple times.
Meanwhile, the boy's father tried to open the door, and the Wendy's restaurant manager brought the key to open it.
Police said Brown then opened the door, shoved the 10-year-old victim out and locked it from the inside. By the time officers arrived, several people inside the restaurant were holding the bathroom door shut and keeping Brown trapped inside.
Brown claimed to have a gun inside the bathroom, police said. Officers evacuated the restaurant and activated the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and crisis negotiators, who got Brown to surrender after more than two hours. No gun was found, but police did recover a knife.
The boy was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and is now recovering.
Officers said Brown was a complete stranger to the boy he attacked.
Brown pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of attempted murder, assault in the first degree, sex abuse in the first degree, kidnap in the first degree, arson, furnishing false information to a police officer and coercion.
His arrest comes eight years after he was released from an Oregon prison, where he served time for sodomy.
An Associated Press story from 1992 shared troubling details about Brown's past, including allegations that he tried to infect children with the AIDS virus by forcing sex upon them. The AP reported that a blood test had confirmed Brown's HIV status.
