BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A group of local students is getting a first-hand look at the devastation caused by the 2011 tsunami and earthquake in Japan.

Twenty-three students from the Beaverton area are taking part in the Kizuna Project, which means "bonds of friendship," according to the project's website.

They flew out of PDX on Sunday.

The Japanese government created the program to teach young people about becoming better global citizens.

They get to volunteer in the country and see the disaster sites for two weeks.

Fox 12 spoke to Beaverton student Celia Meredith: "A lot of this is just kind of to raise spirits in Japan and just kinda show that the people affected by the earthquake and by the tsunami are not a alone in what they're going through like there are people paying attention there are people who want to make life better for them again."

A total of 1,000 students from across the U.S. are taking part in the project.

They will meet up with student volunteers from 40 other countries.
