ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

A train struck and killed a man who had been lying down on the tracks along Highway 30 on Tuesday morning.

Columbia County sheriff's deputies said the Portland Western train's horn sounded as it approached the man near the highway at Berg Road near the town of Warren.

The engineer said the man tried to get up, but was hit and killed at about 5:30 a.m.

Fifteen minutes earlier, there was a report of a man staggering around on Highway 30, but deputies haven't confirmed whether that was the man who was struck by the train.

The man's name hasn't been released.
