SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
Three boys playing with fireworks caused a duplex fire in northeast Salem on Tuesday night.
Firefighters were called to the home at 4306 San Francisco Dr. NE at about 8:15 p.m.
Crews quickly determined there was no one inside the duplex, and they worked to isolate the flames to one side of the building and the roof area.
Fire officials said the exterior of the duplex suffered extensive fire damage and the interior was damaged by water and smoke.
Investigators blamed three boys, ages 7 to 10 years old, for starting the fire. The boys had kicked fireworks into some nearby shrubs next to the duplex. The shrubs caught fire and the flames spread to the building.
The resident of the duplex wasn't home when the fire broke out. The boys were released to their parents, and the investigation has been passed on to the Marion County Juvenile Department to determine whether any charges should be filed.
