HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

The Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter in Washington County is open on the Fourth of July to reunite lost pets with their people.

Deborah Wood, manager of Animal Services for Washington County, said there are more lost animals during Fourth of July week than any other week of the year.

After hours Tuesday, six dogs were brought to the shelter by police agencies. And within 15 minutes of the shelter opening Wednesday, Good Samaritans had brought in two cats.

"We want to get these animals home just as fast as we can," Wood said.

An Animal Services officer will be on site to bring dogs inside as police arrive with lost animals Wednesday night during Fourth of July fireworks shows.

Pets brought to the shelter can be seen on the shelter's website within an hour of admission. Go to www.WashingtonCountyPets.com, click on "Lost and Found" and then click on "Viewing the Lost Pets."
