HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -
An alert homeowner escaped a fire after smelling burning plastic and breaking glass.
The fire started before 8:50 Friday night at the house on Southeast Primrose Court near Tanager in Hillsboro.
After smelling the smoke the homeowner found heavy smoke and was forced to run from the house, leaving his two cats behind.
The homeowner then ran to the neighbor's house to call 911.
Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the front door and front window of the one-story home.
The first arriving fire engine knocked down the flames at the entrance to the home, and continued crews continued to fight the fire as they entered the house.
Additional crews searched the home and confirmed that no one was inside.
The front of the home suffered extensive fire damage and the rest of the house was damaged by heat and smoke. Crews estimate $175,000 damage.
No one was hurt. The homeowner's two cats were found unharmed under a shed in the back yard.
Crews are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
