Fire displaces dozens in Pendleton

PENDLETON, OR (KPTV) -

A fire that tore through two apartment buildings in Pendleton over the weekend has left dozens of people without homes, the Pendleton Fire Department reported.

Crews responded to the apartments on SW 28th Drive at 3:18 p.m. Saturday afternoon and discovered that a grass fire nearby had spread to the buildings, investigators said.

According to firefighters, strong winds helped spread the flames, making the fire more difficult to fight.

By 5:36 p.m., crews had the fire under control, but the flames had already caused at least $3 million in damage, investigators said.

No injuries have been reported, but authorities said several dozen people have been displaced as a result of the fire.  The American Red Cross is now assisting those residents with temporary shelter.
