MILL CITY, OR (KPTV) -

Passing motorists gave a deputy a "thumbs up" after he pulled over an Aloha man clocked going 112 mph, Marion County deputies said.

Investigators said Jason Butters was behind the wheel of his dad's 2008 Acura RDZ on Sunday morning when Sr. Deputy Jeff Nicoloff spotted him.

Butters was rounding the bend on Highway 22, traveling westbound, passing another vehicle and barely maintaining control in his lane, detectives said.

Based upon his experience, Nicoloff could see that the car was moving at a high rate of speed, and he was able to verify that speed with a 112 mph readout on his LIDAR unit.

The road in this area has two westbound lanes (one designed for passing), and one eastbound lane. There is no center divider separating the traffic, and there are many curves, deputies said.

Nicoloff stopped the Acura, and Butters told him he wasn't sure how fast he was going, but felt it was "safe" because he was passing other cars, investigators told FOX 12.

Other drivers honked their horns, waved and gave the deputy a thumbs up as they drove by the traffic stop, authorities reported.

Nicoloff is part of an eight-deputy Traffic Safety Team that focuses on reducing injuries and deaths caused by motor vehicle crashes.

One of the major contributors to these crashes is speeding.

The team employs a strategy that uses enforcement, education and roadway engineering suggestions to improve safety on our roads.

Butters was arrested for reckless driving and cited for excessive speed.

He was booked into the Marion County Jail.

The vehicle was impounded at the scene.

He has prior speeding convictions on his record, deputies said.
