SCAPPOOSE, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters came to the aid of a baby calf stuck in the mud off Sauvie Island on Saturday evening.

Sauvie Island firefighters asked for the help of Scappoose fire crews just before 5 p.m.

The calf was stuck in the mud and surrounded by water in the area of the Gilbert River access in the Multnomah Channel.

Once crews responded, Scappoose firefighters Peter Williamson swam to the calf, harnessed it and directed him into the water and toward the Columbia County Sheriff's Office marine patrol boat.

Deputies then towed the calf down river to safety.

Once they were near the shore, the calf was freed from its harness and swam to shore, then ran to his owner on Sauvie Island.
