Police: Man bites officer in downtown Portland

Posted: Updated:

Portland Police said a man chasing his ex-boyfriend down a downtown Portland street bit an officer who was trying to make contact with him Monday night.

When police arrived at the scene near Southwest Fifth Avenue and Main Street, 23-year-old Justin Hale was found screaming, flailing his arms and running down the street after his ex, officers said.

When an officer tried to contact Hale, he fought back, police said, and bit the officer on the upper arm outside of the uniform.

The bitten officer used his Taser to gain control, but he could not restrain the suspect until several other officers arrived and helped take Hale into custody.

The bite did not break through the uniform and did not puncture the officer's skin.

Hale was brought to Multnomah County Jail on charges of domestic violence, attempted assault of a public safety officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct in the second degree.
