"The neighbor across the street was playing with her two pit bulls, just playing catch. And a woman walked by with her basset hound. We waved. She crossed the street," said Megan Sandmann, who lives across the street from McCommons. "It was then, one of the pit bulls charged the basset hound. I think the basset hound was just looking the other direction. And it was just on its head."
Sandmann said the two women tried to separate the dogs by pulling them away. She tried to help by pulling at the dog, but said he would not stop going after the basset hound.
"At a couple points we managed to get him off and that's when he was attacking the two ladies next to him," she said, "but most of the time, it was red eyes for the basset hound."
Other neighbors tried to help by spraying mace and a hose at the pit bull, but were unsuccessful.
Police said the dog started aggressively towards the officer, so the officer shot the pit bull three times. It died at the scene.
