Cold case detectives looking into murder of federal defense attorney

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland homicide detectives are teaming up with the Cold Case Unit to hopefully solve the 2009 murder of a Portland woman.

In November 2009, officers found 57-year-old Nancy Bergeson dead in her Southwest Portland home.

At first, the medical examiner thought Bergeson died from natural causes, but further testing showed she was murdered.

Homicide detectives continue to work on the case every day, but now they're getting help from members of the Portland Police Cold Case Unit - a group of expert detectives, some of whom are retired, dedicated to solving murders.

Detectives Michele Michaels and Bryan Steed have been working on the investigation since day one and they want to make it clear that this case has not gone cold.

They say they are simply bringing in more resources for a fresh perspective.

"We're trying everything we can and we're looking at so many different things," said Detective Michaels.  "It just seems like a really great idea to use that expertise."

Nancy Bergeson lived alone in southwest Portland near Hamilton Park. She was a dragon boater, a friend to many and a federal defense attorney.

Detectives won't reveal what evidence they have in the case, but they say they still do interviews and get tips every week. Now, they're just hoping for a call from the right witness.

"Whether you think you could help or not, come forward with the information," Steed said.  "Provide us with the information and let us make the decision on whether it's helpful or not."

Cold Case detectives have been digging into the file on Bergeson's murder for about six weeks.

There is no way to guarantee a break in the case, but Detective Michaels is grateful for their help.

"We just want to find resolution for the friends and family because that would be good for them," he said.

Crimestoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
