PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The first of five weekend closures to repave a one mile stretch of Interstate 5 between the Fremont Bridge and the Marquam Bridge has begun.

Traffic is at a standstill at times as travelers attempt to make their way from Vancouver and north Portland to the south side of town by detouring onto I-405. Traffic on I-84 eastbound to I-5 is also experiencing heavy delays.

The project started late Friday night and will last until early Monday morning.

The closure is needed as crews resurface a one-mile stretch of I-5 between Northeast Holladay Street and the Marquam Bridge. This will be the first of five weekend directional closures, two in the southbound lanes, two in the northbound lanes and the fifth still to be determined.

Through traffic on I-5 southbound will follow a detour using Interstate 405 southbound, and motorists heading for Interstate 84 should use I-405 to I-5 north.

Local traffic to the Rose Quarter from I-5 south can use the Rose Quarter off-ramp (exit 302A).

The closure of I-5 southbound requires closing the following ramps to keep motorists out of the work zone:

·           I-84 westbound to I-5 southbound

·           I-405 to I-5 southbound

·           I-5 southbound to I-84 eastbound

·           I-5 southbound on-ramp at the Rose Quarter

·           I-5 southbound on-ramp at Greely

Below is a schedule for all five closures, which is subject to change based upon weather and the progress of the contractor and weather:

·           11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday: I-5 southbound will close

·           11 p.m. July 20 to 5 a.m. July 23: I-5 southbound will close

·           11 p.m. July 27 to 5 a.m. July 30: I-5 northbound will close

·           11 p.m. Aug. 3 to 5 a.m. Aug. 6: I-5 northbound will close

·           11 p.m. Aug. 17 to 5 a.m. Aug. 20: If needed

Weekend directional closures are necessary to allow the contractor to replace damaged concrete panels and repair failed utilities under the freeway.  The resurfacing work will also require some weeknight freeway closures and on-ramp and off-ramp closures. ODOT will announce these closures as scheduled.
