A neighbor carrying a fire extinguisher rushed over to a home on Everett Street in northeast Portland after a fire broke out in the kitchen Friday afternoon.
A man in his 80s lived at the home near Northeast 30th Avenue and Everett, fire officials said. He was not injured in the blaze.
Flames spread from the kitchen to the attic, and a decent portion of the home was lost, officials said.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire once they arrived. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, but initial findings point to a grease fire.
There were initial reports of an explosion at the home, but firefighters haven't confirmed that.
