MILWAUKIE, OR (KPTV) -

A Milwaukie man said he and a friend were "just fooling around" when they drove too far down a boat ramp and right into the Willamette River.

The front tires of Andrew McNerthney's Dodge pickup truck went off the edge of the paved ramp and the truck became stuck in the water at the Oak Grove boat ramp Monday afternoon.

SLIDESHOW: Pickup submerged in water

With the truck stuck, McNerthney released the emergency brake in hopes of backing the truck out of the water, but it then rolled into the river and became completely submerged.

McNerthney and a passenger, Jason Carter, of Gladstone, were able to climb out of the truck and get to shore safely.

Marine patrol deputies and dive team members responded and attached a tow cable to the truck. It was removed from the water about an hour later.

McNerthney was cited for careless driving, deputies said.
