Oregon wildfires trigger state of emergency

Posted: Updated:
SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

The governor has declared a state of emergency as wildfires continue to burn in southeastern Oregon.

Gov. John Kitzhaber signed an executive order today asking state agencies to help landowners and ranchers. He also requested federal disaster aid.

There have been three major fires so far this season and all but one are under control. In total, they have scorched more than 75,000 acres.

The Miller Homestead fire near Frenchglen still burns, but is now 85 percent contained. The Bonita complex fire and the Long Draw fire, which was the largest fire in the country at one point, are now both 100 percent contained.

All three fires are thought to have been sparked by lightning.
