A Vancouver company will begin removing the derelict dock that washed up on Agate Beach on Tuesday, July 31.
Ballard Diving and Salvage was awarded a contract for $84,155 to complete the work, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department said. The dock from Japan was propelled into the ocean by the tsunami in March 2011 and came ashore near Newport on June 5, 2012.
The removal of the 66-foot-long dock is expected to take three to seven days depending on tide and safety needs, the parks department said. The beach will remain open, but a closed safety zone will be in place around the dock demolition site.
The parks department said the salvage company workers plan to cut the dock into several pieces, put them on a heavy-haul truck and bring them to the Portland area for final demolition and recycling.
There may be congestion on the roads near Agate Beach State Park as a result of the work.
