PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Two young children were hit by a car in Southeast Portland Thursday night.
It happened at Southeast 72nd and Flavel Street just before 6 p.m.
Police said a 19-year-old woman fell asleep at the wheel and hit a 5-year-old boy and an 18-month-old girl.
Ashley Mason was cited for careless driving.
The children were with their mother waiting to cross the street when they were hit on the sidewalk. The 18-month-old girl was in a stroller.
"Somebody ran into the store to borrow our phone and said, ‘Baby got hit! Baby got hit,'" said Albert Manning, who works at a nearby convenience store.
The 5-year-old boy was listed in serious condition at the hospital Thursday night. His little sister's injuries are non-life-threatening. She was treated by emergency crews at the scene.
Police said Mason showed no signs of impairment.
