No I-5 closure in Portland this weekend due to rain

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A major closure of Interstate 5 southbound scheduled for this weekend won't happen after all because of wet weather in Portland.

ODOT crews planned to shut down all of I-5 southbound between the Fremont and Marquam Bridges from Friday night to Monday morning. But the polymer concrete being applied in this mile-long stretch of the freeway is very sensitive to moisture, officials said.

The rain jeopardizes the polymer's ability to bond appropriately by Monday morning, when the freeway was scheduled to reopen. As a result, ODOT scrapped the weekend work and closure.

Assuming weather allows it, ODOT plans to close I-5 southbound next weekend to continue the repairs to the freeway.

The same closure last weekend made for a traffic nightmare for weekend closures.
